Anyone entering the traditional house of a nobleman on the island of Tanimbar in southeastern Maluku would be greeted by an intricately carved wooden plank with outstretched arms known as tavu which signifies a founding ancestor. Ancestor figures such as the present one and other paraphernalia would be placed on top of the tavu, forming a complete family shrine. This ancestor figure depicts a sensitively carved ancestor figure in a sitting position, arms on his knees and holding an offering cup (long gone from this statuette, but see the image of a similar figure below). The figure has a thick coat of blackish patina from years of exposure to cooking smoke. Ex. Bruce Frank.
