Timor has a splendid traditional in textile weaving. Through the use of colors, motifs and patterning, textiles convey the precise social status of a person in the community. Textiles are also used in almost every important ceremony from rice harvesting and gift exchange between bridge givers and bride takers. This plain weave rectangular cloth is a man’s hip or shoulder wrap. The weaver has used the beige background to great effect by adding rows of colorful stylized lizards. Lizards, crocodiles and birds are common motifs in Timor art.
